An UnderDog flash battery is a sexy, light-weight, 6 volt/1.3 Amp/hr lead-acid, rechargeable flash battery that attaches to the bottom of most cameras or motor drives. An UnderDog (and the right Quantum* cable and UnderDog "Short Leash") can power about 100 different brands of portable shoe mount flashes. Nikon SB and Canon EZ & EX, Minolta 5200/5400 TTL strobes as well as the standard Vivitar 283/285 auto-thyristor units are UnderDog friendly. *Quantum Instruments' Battery 1+ power cables fit the UnderDog flash battery. Q's Battery 1+ cables are not sold from the UnderDog factory but are available from a network of about a bazzillion photo equipment stores. -
UnderDog
"Short Leash" power
cables are available for Nikon SB, Canon EZ and EX, various Vivitars,
the Sunpack 120J and selected Minolta & Metz flash models. "Short
Leash" cables are designed for on-camera use, are available from the
factory (sometimes from a dealer) and each costs $60.00 plus $5.00 for shipping
and handling. Allow 7-10 days for delivery. |
The UnderDog flash
battery is celebrating it's 18th year of production. Go figure! It
was originally introduced in 1989 by John Van Beekum from Miami, FL. Jon
Falk, President of Jon Falk
Lights Ltd., Inc., and author of Adventures In Location Lighting, took
over manufacture and distribution of the popular UnderDog flash battery
in
1995. Falk was once a real newspaper photographer, taught lighting seminars for ten years and even took first prize in a long forgotten photography contest. He is a lifelong member of the NPPA, and has recently retired from many years as the "night picture editor at the Philadelphia Daily News", aka, 'Tab From Hell'. Making and selling Dog batteries offers him needed relief from newspaper technology wars. Dog batteries (click the PRODUCTS bone) come two to a kit and can be recharged anywhere in the world. The UnderDog kit includes a dual-voltage (switchable 120VAC/60Hz - 230VAC/50Hz) quick charger. AutoDog 2, an accessory 12 volt car charger, is also available. Usually attached to the bottom of a camera or motor drive, an UnderDog is also easily carried loose in a photo vest pocket or in a small belt pouch. This sort of flexibility is why Falk thinks all newspaper photographers, magazine shooters, travel photographers and professional 'wannbes' - who need to travel light and shoot right - should own these batteries. Credit card sales are possible through all retail Dog dealers (click the DEALER bone). Emergency sales from the Dog factory require cash, check, money order and a note from a mom. The phone/fax number at the Dog factory is (856) 854-6543. "Building a small, tough, reliable flash battery that won't pull your pants down is what this all about, said Falk, and finding lots of new customers with money to spend pretty much explains why I do this," he added. ©1999 e-mail to Jon Falk |
